Piano Readiness and the Preschooler
One of the most often asked questions as a piano teacher is, what is a good age to begin lessons? In general, age 6 or 7 is a great age to begin, but really it depends on the child. Establishing a practice routine early on can carry forward into later years. If you have a child that is younger than 6, and seems quite interested in music, particularly piano, your child may be ready for lessons.
Many pre-school piano curriculum are designed for a group class, such as Music for Little Mozarts (ages 4, 5, an 6). I took this method and paired it down to fit a one-on-one 30 minute piano lesson for several of my younger students and they have done quite well with it! They enjoy the attractive songs that include classical music, marches, circus music, and adventure music and they LOVE the stuffed animals that accompany the characters in the lessons.
